Choosing Action over Dependence: The Story of the Farmer and the Birds Nest

(A timeless story that reminds us of the wisdom of taking charge of our own lives, without relying on anyone else.)

“If it’s your job to eat a frog, it’s best to do it first thing in the morning. And if it’s your job to eat two frogs, it’s best to eat the biggest one first.” — Mark Twain

This quote emphasizes the importance of tackling the most challenging task first, instead of delaying it and letting it weigh on our minds.

Story of a Farmer and a Bird’s Nest:

There was a wheat field where a bird had built her nest to raise their family. Soon the eggs hatched and they had beautiful children.

The days passed, and the wheat grew tall, as did the young birds. One day, the farmer and his son came into the field and discussed that it was time to harvest the wheat.

The farmer said he would ask his neighbor to harvest the field.

The children overheard and got frightened. When the parent birds returned, the children told them what they had heard.

But the mother bird reassured her children, saying the neighbors will not take this up. Now is not the time to leave our nest.

“The most important thing in life is to stop saying ‘I wish’ and start saying ‘I will.’ Consider nothing impossible, then treat possibilities as probabilities.” — Charles Dickens

A few days later, the Farmer came by and was surprised to see the field as-is. He then said that this time he will tell his close relative to harvest the field.

The mother bird again reassured her children that nothing is going to happen!

Finally, the farmer realized that he should not wait any longer for help from his friends and relatives. He proclaimed that he will do it himself.

The bird family did not lose any time after hearing this and left the nest. By this time the kids had learned to fly.

The next day, when the farmer and his son cut down the grain, they found an empty nest.

Here are a few quotes on taking up seemingly impossible tasks:

“It always seems impossible until it’s done.” — Nelson Mandela

“Believe you can and you’re halfway there.” — Theodore Roosevelt

“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” — Eleanor Roosevelt

“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.” — Winston Churchill

The story of Farmer and Bird’s Nest teaches us the importance of self-reliance and independence. By depending on oneself, we can achieve anything we set our minds to. Waiting for others to help can result in missed opportunities, and sometimes, we must take the initiative and do things ourselves. Just like the farmer, when we decide to take charge and not depend on anyone else, we become unstoppable.

“In the end, we only regret the chances we didn’t take.” — Lewis Carroll
